Day 2 In The Otways | Lavers Hill | Yatzies Cafe [IN HD]

Day 2 of my trip in the Otway rain forest, my friends and I pull into a roadside cafe in Lavers Hill called Yatzies. I will skip the usual introductory nonsense and state two points that need mentioning about this cafe. First of all, the pies are expensive ($6), and they, wait … wait for it … charge a $2 plating fee to put your pie on a plate. This is true bullshit. For these reasons Yatzies cafe itself receives a rating of 1 out of 10, and only because the place was tidy and the counter lady was nice. I bought a Black Angus Beef Pie and sat down with my pie and paper bag. This pie was made by and imported from Boscastle hand made pies, so any due credit is owed to them.

Cost: $6 …

Pastry: a perfect middle point between firm and soft. Buttery and a little sweet, with beads of pepper on the lid giving it a touch of bitterness. Quite delicious.

Meat: Boscastle‘s Black Angus Beef Pie consists of wholesome chunks of beef and a simple yet defined gravy of onions, garlic and tomatoes. The beef is rich-tasting and a little chewy and the casserole-gravy is hearty.

Overall Satisfaction: honestly impressed, although it needs a little extra pepper to make this pie properly full-bodied.

Cost to Satisfaction Ratio: look, $6 for a pie is really pushing it, especially when it doesn’t come on a plate when you sit down at the cafe to eat. However, this is a good pie, not exceptional, but very good. The cost to satisfaction ratio is high.

Grading: B+
